According to Robert Novak, White House Counsel Harriet Miers and Third Circuit Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., remain in the running to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. Erick at Confirm Them also has Judge Alito on his list, but paired with Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura D. Corrigan (and with Judge Karen J. Williams of the Fourth Circuit as the backup).
So, given the buzz around him, should Judge Samuel Alito start breaking out the champagne? Unless he has discovered a long-lost Latino ancestor, that would be premature. The White House could simply be using Sam Alito as a "trial balloon," to float the idea of Justice O'Connor being replaced by a white male. Judge Alito could merely be serving as an "Edith Brown Clement," to provide political cover for the "John Roberts" of one J. Michael Luttig.
Stay tuned...
Someone on confirmthem.com is reporting he got a call from a friend in the White House counsel's office and that the nominee is Alice Batchelder. Take it for what it's worth....

A3G:
Judge Callahan is the surprise. Judge Corrigan would be another. It is unlikely that this position would go to a man - white, black, or Hispanic.
It is a woman. Follow the gender...
