Whether you agree or disagree with the views of Judge William H. Pryor, Jr., you have to admit: the man has got cojones!*
Unlike many of the Senate Democrats, A3G thought that John G. Roberts was perfectly forthcoming in discussing substantive legal questions at his confirmation hearings. But JGR wasn't quite this forthcoming!
One can expect Harriet Miers, who's no chatty Cathy even outside the hearing room, to be even more circumspect when she goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Expect Miers and her handlers to try and keep her television time to a minimum. As noted by The Note, at this morning's White House announcement, Miers "demonstrated that she may not be as comfortable on camera as the consistently smooth John Roberts."
"Mr. DeMille, she's not ready for her close-up..."
* Judge Pryor's comments on Roe v. Wade were made at his Eleventh Circuit confirmation hearings. As a nominee to an intermediate appeals court, as opposed to the Supreme Court, Bill Pryor easily could have gotten away with mouthing the usual platitudes about Roe being "settled law," "the law of the land," "binding upon lower court judges," etc. But he instead went out of his way to take a stand. Good for him!
(Yes, A3G believes in "The Ginsburg Precedent," and no, she doesn't think that Harriet Miers should be forced to tell the Judiciary Committee members her views on Roe. But A3G still has to admire anyone, liberal or conservative, who can be as gutsy at their confirmation hearings as Judge Pryor was at his.)
Judge Pryor. Now that would have been a great pick for the SCOTUS.
